6,000 Students Participate in
Poster Arts Contest Sponsored by The Links, Incorporated
Washington, DC (September, 2006). Walking Fete:
Make Health a Habit! was the theme for the 2005-2006 Poster Art
Contest sponsored by The Links, Incorporated. The contest involved 144
chapters sharing the importance of exercise, eating healthy and watching
their weight with over 6,000 students. Marcia White, National Director
of The Links Arts Facet, who previously served as National
Chair, Poster Art Contest, received submissions from more than half of
the organization’s 273 chapters located in 42 states, the District of
Columbia, Nassau, Bahamas, Frankfurt, Germany and South Africa.
Chairpersons of Arts Committees within the four
areas served by The Links, include Lisa Simmons (Eastern Area),
Lynette Murphy (Central Area), Jemmie Hawkins (Southern
Area), and Harriet Kelley (Western Area). These Area
Chairpersons, and committee member Whitnei Anderson, worked
diligently to obtain these outstanding responses. Lorethea Davis,
Acting Executive Director of The Links Foundation, Incorporated was
instrumental in supporting this endeavor.
The Poster Art Contest Premiere National Exhibition
took place at the 35th National Assembly in Philadelphia which was
designed and executed by K. Joy Peters, Vice National
Chair, Poster Art Contest. Seventeen Area winners received $500
scholarships and four National winners received $1,000 scholarships. The
posters were judged on Saturday, May 13, 2006 on Long Island, New York
to determine the four National winners. “This cooperative effort clearly
demonstrates that the women of The Links, Incorporated understand the
concept of promoting the common good by providing life-changing options
for young people of African ancestry within our communities.
Congratulations to the winners,” said Ms. White.
