AARP PARTNERSHIP: Are You Ready? |
| |
|
|
Link Sisters – Are You Ready? Are you ready to address
the financial, health and policy concerns that you face as 50 year-old
woman taking care of yourself, children, parents and/or a spouse?
Are the members of your community ready?
We are proud to announce the expansion of the Are You Ready
program. The new Are You Ready Academy is designed to provide
tools and resources from a grassroots level to support African-American
women who are preparing for life as they age or currently dealing
with the aging process. The program will include components for
preventative measures during each specific life stage, in addition
to immediate support and services for the 50+ community. The Academy
will be targeted to designated chapters geographically aligned with
AARP’s priority areas (Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami
and New York).
|
The program will help prepare African-American women age 50 and
older to address critical issues in their life such as health, wellness
and financial stability. The Academy will implement a two-pronged
program that addresses issues of self readiness and caregiver readiness.
Focal points of the program include:
| » Exercise and diet programs |
» Caregiving, support systems and tools |
| » Disease preventative care information and resources |
» Financial planning options for self and family |
| » Resources for preparing for retirement |
» Support for current retirees |
| » Health/life insurance guides and information |
» Time and money management for self and family |
| » Health care reform education |
» Grandparenting support and resources |
Look for the rollout of the Are You Ready Academy at
your Area Conference.

NATIONAL HBCU INITIATIVE: Links Participate in NAFEO
Conference |
| |
|
|
The National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education
(NAFEO*) 37th National Conference on Blacks in Higher Education:
HBCUs &PBIs: Fostering Access and Success; Fueling Innovation
and Competitiveness was held in Washington, DC, April 5 – 8,
2011. The NAFEO convening on Blacks in higher education brought
together a broad and diverse group of leaders of higher education
institutions and associations, influential education policymakers
and executives; business, philanthropic, government, advocacy, civic,
faith, and student leaders.
A press conference held at the National Press Club kicked-off the
NAFEO conference. Alongside Link Mary Sias, President, Kentucky
State University, and press conference host, National President
Margot James Copeland participated in an opening dialogue on our
educational institutions. Link Margot and six other distinguished
panelists addressed the issues of Blacks in higher education; closing
the achievement and attainment gaps; increasing the outcomes for
all students, especially those who have been traditionally underrepresented
or underserved in the American education system; supporting HBCUs
and Predominately Black Institutions (PBIs) in fostering access
and success; and issues of community and corporate leadership, and
social responsibility. Link Margot also eloquently spoke of her
purposeful commitment to HBCUs, not only as a proud HBCU graduate,
put as the granddaughter, daughter and mother of HBCU graduates.
The Links, Incorporated co-hosted the April 6 panel “Collaboration
Between Two Year and Four Year Colleges: Developing Best Practices.”
The session allowed for a discussion between two- and four- year
college presidents, other educators and community leaders regarding
the urgent need for collaboration between the two- and four-year
sectors in higher education to ensure a critical mass of minority
college graduates with two- or four-year degrees by 2020. Link Margot;
session moderator Link Dorothy Yancy, Chair, National HBCU Initiative;
Provocateur, Link Jacquelyn Madry-Taylor, Chief Research Officer
UNCF-SP; Link Mary Sias, President, Kentucky State University; and
Link Marye Jeffries, Board Member, Fayetteville Technical College,
served on the panel and lent their voice to the discussion on best
collaboration practices and how to engage policy makers and policy
shapers to achieve educational excellence and equity.
*NAFEO is the only national
membership association of its kind. It represents the Historically
Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Predominantly Black
Institutions (PBIs), roughly one hundred and fifty (150) colleges
and universities in thirty-five (35) states, the District of Columbia
and Virgin Islands; five hundred thousand (500,000) students, fifty
thousand (50,000) faculty, and five (5) million alumni. |
