 NATIONAL CARES MENTORING MOVEMENT

NATIONAL CARES MENTORING MOVEMENTThe Links, Incorporated is proud of its partnership with the National CARES Mentoring Movement, and is committed to continuing our focus on mentoring as part of our strategic programming efforts. The National CARES Mentoring Movement (NCMM) inspires, galvanizes and recruits Links and community members to commit an hour a week to local mentoring and youth-support organizations or institutions in order to provide role models who play an active role in helping to shape the development of young people. By mentoring a young person, Links can help redirect the course of life for our youth.

On February 20, 2011, Susan L. Taylor, Founder, National Cares Mentoring Movement, and, Editor-in-Chief Emeritus of Essence Magazine, held a fundraising reception in Miami, FL. Link Alma Dodd, Director of National Programs and Strategic Partnerships joined our South Florida Link Sisters in supporting the South Florida CARES Circle.
This intimate fundraiser provided attendees an opportunity to learn more about this unprecedented youth-outreach program and the launch of an innovative pilot approach to mentoring children at the Seagull and Whiddon - Rogers Schools in South Florida.

Thank you to our South Florida Link Sisters. Your presence and generous donations helped to kick off the South Florida CARES Circle effort.

As your chapter begins to think about your programming initiatives, you are encouraged to consider supporting our national partnership with the National CARES Mentoring Movement. Chapters interested in adopting this program are asked to create a CARES Circle and serve as a voice for mentoring in local communities. The role of chapters will be to recruit volunteers to become mentors, form on-going relationships with vetted local mentoring organizations, share best practices, and work with community leaders, including educators, to strengthen public education and turn underserved schools into successful, safe learning environments. Our commitment to mentoring will communicate to our young people in crisis that the community loves and values them and is committed to helping them.

The National CARES Mentoring Movement toolkit sponsored by FedEx and created expressly for the use of our chapters, is available online in Members Only. You may also visit www.caresmentoring.org.

HEARTLINKS: DIET COKE®  “CAPTURE THE FLAG” TOURNAMENT

HEARTLINKS: DIET COKE®  “CAPTURE THE FLAG” TOURNAMENT On February 14, 2011, Diet Coke® and The Heart Truth® hosted a “Capture the Flag” tournament to raise much needed awareness and funds for heart health programs in Washington, D.C. This event helped kick off Diet Coke’s 2011 program activities with The Heart Truth campaign.

Teams comprising of various representatives from Capital Hill, D.C. media outlets, and Washington Area sports teams competed to win $20,000 in donations for four local heart health organizations. Out of appreciation for our continued support of The Heart Truth campaign, the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute nominated The Links Foundation, Incorporated to be one of the organizations.

CQ Roll Call, the leading media company providing congressional news, was randomly selected to play for The Links Foundation, Incorporated. Victorious in their efforts, Diet Coke presented a $10,000 check to The Links Foundation, Incorporated for the HeartLinks Signature Program.

"CQ Roll Call was proud to take a victory lap at the Heart Truth capture the flag game. This was more than just beating the National Journal and the House of Representatives team - this was standing up for a worthwhile cause that promotes better heart health for all women. We're honored to bring home the winning trophy to The Links, Incorporated, and we're proud to stand behind them for the upstanding work that they do." - Rebecca Gale, Director of Promotions for CQ Roll Call.

Link Mary E. Clark, Chair, HeartLinks Signature Program, pictured here with Washington Redskins Lorenzo Alexander and Chris Cooley, and team CQ Roll Call, accepted the check on behalf of The Links Foundation, Incorporated.

 NATIONAL DONATE LIFE MONTH!

April is National Donate Life Month and provides a special opportunity for our community to honor and celebrate organ and tissue donors and the miracle of transplantation.

Why Minority Donors Are Needed:
People of all ages, races, and ethnicities can save and enhance lives by donating their organs, eyes and tissues. Organ and tissue transplants are needed by people from every area of our nation.

The donation rate of most races and ethnicities in the U.S. is proportionate to their representation in the population. The need for transplants in some demographic groups, however, is disproportionately high, frequently due to a high incidence of conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes, both of which can lead to the need for a kidney transplant.

For example, African-Americans, Asians and Pacific Islanders, and Hispanics are three times more likely than Whites to suffer from end-stage renal (kidney) disease, often as the result of high blood pressure and other conditions that can damage the kidneys. Almost 35 % of the more than 80,000 people on the national waiting list for a kidney transplant are African-American.

Although organs are not matched according to race/ethnicity, and people of different races frequently match one another, all individuals waiting for an organ transplant will have a better chance of receiving one if there are large numbers of donors from their racial/ethnic background. Compatible blood types and tissue markers, critical qualities for donor/recipient matching, are more likely to be found among members of the same ethnicity. A greater diversity of donors may potentially increase access to transplantation for everyone.
